As most people are making resolutions to eat healthy and lose weight in 2019, it's also important to think of ways to improve your home's energy use in the New Year. You can keep more money in the bank and enjoy better comfort by making a few simple changes starting now!
Many homeowners set their thermostat too high in winter and too low in summer, when each degree actually costs an extra 2% than what needs to be spent. It's possible to live comfortably at 76 to 78 degrees when it's warm outside, and at 66 to 68 when it's cold outside. The key is dressing appropriately inside the home, whether that means wearing shorts and a Tshirt in summer or bundling up in hoodies and fuzzy socks in winter. So make a resolution to set your thermostat on temperatures that will lower your energy bill!
Your HVAC system will work the most efficiently if the air it heats or cools can reach its destination quickly. This means you should make sure vents are clear of furniture, and your ducts shouldn't have any cracks or holes. Make a resolution to have your air ducts checked in the New Year. You'll be amazed at the money you can save on energy bills (and how much more comfy your rooms will be) by having leaky ducts sealed!
A dirty air filter reduces energy efficiency and shortens your HVAC system’s lifespan, so it's best to change your filter every 30 days if you have shedding pets, and every other month if you don't. So put a reminder in your calendar to change your filter regularly and you'll enjoy lower bills.
Without enough insulation, your home could be constantly losing heated or cooled air through the roof and walls, making you pay up to 30% more than you should be for energy bills. Start the New year by making an appointment to have your insulation levels checked, or better yet, an energy audit! Knowing where you could be saving energy is quite eye opening!
